Free Movie Tuesday

Every Tuesday I go to the movies for free. After that, I shall write my thoughts on the movie!

So I’ve decided to that for now on, every Tuesday I will venture out to Chelsea and watch a movie and pick up donuts at Doughnut Plant (excellent donuts, visit sometime!!)
Today’s choice was The Skin I Live In starring Antonio Banderas. It’s a foreign film (Spanish) and well worth the watch.
From IMDB:
A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession.
There is way  more to this movie than that summary, and I’m really glad that they don’t reveal more than that. The trailers are pretty vague as well.
SPOILERS
Robert, played by Banderas, is more royally fucked than you can imagine. His wife was in a car crash that involved his brother, who Robert actually doesn’t know is his actual brother. She suffers extreme burns and Robert found her with a hair of life. Decides he wants to try and save her. When his wife was finally able to walk on her own, she walked over to the window to see outside, but instead sees her reflection and jumps out the window.
Robert attends some sort of party, I think it was a wedding reception, hosted at his house. His daughter, who has social problems, finally opened up and ended up getting raped by a man named Vicente.

The kicker?
What they don’t reveal until mid movie, is that Vicente is actually Vera, the “woman” who Robert has been experimenting with. To punish Vicente, Robert kidnaps him and decided to perform vaginoplasty. He then just completely alters his body and face to transform him into a complete woman who closely resembles his wife.
In the end, Vera, or should I say Vicente, sees an old missing persons ad and decides to try and escape. She kills Robert and the servant and runs back to his mother. The movie ends with her telling Christina and her mother she’s Vicente.
Kind of upset with the way it ended, I really wanted to see how Vicente’s mother would react to his story. Being hispanic, spanish mothers aren’t very understanding if their child is gay, trans, etc. So I would have really loved to know how Vicente’s mother reacted. But overall, fantastic movie. Definitely recommend you watch it!
PS The score is AMAZING! They had a scene at that party with a woman, Concha Buika, singing. It was so beautiful and the way it was shot was just stunning.
